In this thesis, three novel carboxyl-phenolsulfonate and bromo-carboxyl-phenolsulfonate compounds have been synthesized and employed to react with differentsilver and alkaline earth salts, thus affording the formation of21silver(I) and alkalineearth(II) based sulfonate complexes with diverse0-D,1-D,2-D and3-D architectures. These ligands and metal organic complexes were all characterized by elementalanalyses, IR, PL, TG, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Meanwhile, theinfluence of synthetic strategy, pH value of the reaction system, coordination fashion ofligands, as well as the Ag···Ag interaction on the final structures of silver(I) sulfonateshave also been carefully investigated, which indicated that the complicated coordinationmodes of sulfonate and carboxylate groups tend to result in high dimensional networks. The introduce of the4,4'-bipy molecule to the silver(I) sulfonates effectively preventedthe extension of the Ag(I) coordination spheres, and the sulfonate groups only exhibitedmono-or bi-dentate coordination modes to form1-D chain motif. Moreover, thestructural evolutions of alkaline earth(II) sulfonate complexes from0-D to3-D wereinfluenced by the radius of alkaline earth cations and the degree of deprotonation ofligands. Luminescent investigations of the silver(I) and alkaline earth(II) basedsulfonate complexes demonstrated that they can exhibit strong emissions.
