The Cast-rolling forming process on ring is an new process on ring's production which is newly proposed by precision forming research group of Taiyuan University of Science and Technology. Compared to the traditional ring rolling technology, it has the advantages of short process,energy and materials saving,high efficiency and good benefits, and has a broad application prospect. The formation and evolution of the grain structure during the solidification of the ring casting which is an important part of the Cast-rolling forming process on ring are simulated in this paper. Then the results of CAFE simulation of sand casting are compared with the centrifugal casting.The mathematical model and numerical techniques of solidification of the42CrMo melts in the vertical centrifugal field has been established. By means of the above mentioned mathematical models and numerical techniques, the influences of processing parameters to grain structure formation,such as the rotational velocity, casting temperature, the initial temperature of the mould and the heat transfer coefficient are presented and investigated on the basis of calculation for the flow field and temperature filed. Research results of42CrMo alloy microstructure show that a certain thickness of the equiaxed grains had been formed at the outside of the ring and the size of the grain radius increased slowly with the casting temperature increasing;the grain size became homogenization when the rotation speed was increased;the grains become coarse when the mold initial temperature was improved, the bigger of the heat transfer coefficient of the mould the more conducive to the grain refinement. Compared with the sand casting,the solidification structure of the centrifugal casting is better.
