As energy saving and emission reduction become the theme of today's society, natural ventilation is an increasing concern. On one side of the window is the outdoor environment, and on the other the indoor air. Therefore, the shape of its structure and its open mode directly affect the indoor airflow distribution and the ventilation effect. It is worthy of concern on how to control the airflow which flows into the interior from outside and to achieve the ventilation mode to people's wish. It is difficult to control the flow direction by ventilation with the traditional sash window or casement window, because the external air flows into room through the sharp edges of the opening. It is not the result of the suspended sash window which can guide the direction of the flow by changing the window angle. It is more flexible to control the flow using suspended sash window than other windows. The influence of different open modes on the ventilation of a room is the concern of this paper.PIV testing technology is used in a model with a suspended sash window. The model is a reduced scale representation of a practical room. The influences of open mode, swing angle and the location of the outlet on the ventilation performance are analyzed by the flow field and outlet velocity which are obtained by PIV. The result is compared with that of sash window and the following conclusions are drawn:(1) When ventilating with the suspended sash window, a circulation region with slow velocity will be formed. This region has bad ventilation effect. The size of the region reduces its scale when the outlet moves down or the swing angle reduces.The air velocity is faster in the upper part of the ventilation area, where the air quality is better.(2) With the same swing angle and the same outlet location, the flow rate of hopper window is less than top-hung window and horizontally pivoted hung window. The flow rate of suspend sash window has almost the same quantity with that of sash window under the same ventilation area.
