The shearing resistance performance of the road between each layer is the mechanical index which is less involved in the design specification or manual of China even other countries. In this paper, for the structural characteristics of the seme-regid asphalt, according to the strain sensing characteristics of FBG, the shear stress sensor has been developed for the layer within the highway, which has been tested in road pavement structure. The main research works and results include:Firstly, after analyzing present shear stress methods, the test method base on FBG sensor has been proposed. The FBG sensor with the advantage of corrosion resistant, good stability, resistance to electromagnetic interference, high sensitivity, small size, light weight and low cost, which has been used to test the shearing resistance of road between each layer. According to actual application, this method is reliable and easy to real-time monitor as well as low cost.Secondly, the finite element software ABAQUS has been applied to establish the finite element model of the semi-rigid asphalt. By the model, the axle load 13T,15.4T,18.7T and 23.6T which was in the emergency braking conditions would effect on the road pavement and the shear stress distribution of the surface layers has been analyzed respectively.Thirdly, according to the basic principle of FBG sensor and the semi-rigid asphalt concrete pavement construction, a FBG shear stress sensor which is suit for the test of the shear stress between layers of road surface has been developed and calibrated the strain characteristics of FBG sensor. The sensing properties of the sensor have been studied by experiment to obtain the performance parameters of the sensor which can meet the engineering needs.Finally, the FBG shear stress sensor which has researched and developed in this paper has been used to test the road shear stress in different conditions in Saiguo section of Lianhuo highway in Xinjiang, with comparing the effects on the shear stress of each layer in the speed, vehicle weight and four traffic conditions. Compared the test result and the finite element analysis shows that this sensor has stable characteristic and could be widely use in engineering.
