The complexity and variability of geological condition of tunnel project lead to such situations as inconsistency between geological condition and survey and design service, changeable the ground of surrounding rock, and geological hazard. Geological advanced prediction can timely predict unfavorable geological condition of surrounding rock ahead, which can achieve precaution, thus the engineering risk can be reduced. Currently there are a great variety of methods to do geological advanced prediction, and each possesses advantage and drawbacks. Yet a method which can simultaneously satisfy long-distance measuring and high precision measuring in an easy and convenient way is still not available. Therefore, to choose a reasonable method of advanced prediction for according to specific engineer circumstances is of great importance. This paper elaborates geological advanced prediction in terms of long-distance prediction and short-distance prediction, based on the classification of detection range in lead-prediction. The tunnel engineering in Mao Zhanling Tunnel is adopted as the basis of the elaboration, and through the contrast between prediction and actual engineering situation, the characteristics of each prediction method are given. By analyzing the basic principles and prediction process, a solid theoretical foundation has been provided for choosing geological advanced prediction method is provided in tunnel engineering.By reviewing features of several prediction methods, this paper gives opinions on the application of synthetic geological advanced prediction, and studys the method for predicting the grade of surrounding rock of tunnel. Through effective geological prediction on Mao Zhanling's unfavorable geological situation, this paper shows the feasibility of synthetic geological prediction ahead, providing reference for geological prediction of similar tunnel engineering and correspondent precautionary measures.
