In this article, as the main research objects, surplus rural crops stalks and discarded expanded polystyrene (EPS) material have been tapped. On this basis, a new type of rice straw-EPS wall-building composite material with lightweight and heat-retaining properties has been obtained. In the research, effect of modified-rice straw, replacement rate of metakaolin and modified-EPS on improving performance of cenment composites are discussed, moreover, the performances of compound composites such as physical property, mechanical property and heat-insulating property are studied, with different length and content of rice straw and different dosage of EPS particles. After that, by the orthogonal experiments L9(34), it is confirmed that the dosage of EPS particles and rice straw are the major reasons affecting the performance of compound cenmemt wall material, and the optimum conditions for making light thermal insulatiing material were shown as follow: content of rice straw is 3%, replacement rate of metakaolin is 30 It was found that under the optimum conditions, the performance of the rice straw %,_amount of EPS particles is 30% and water to binder ratio is 0.6, reinforced compound lightweight material all achieves anticipative targets. The specific properties as follows:dry apparent density of rice straw reinforced compound cement composites is 215kg/m3, compressive strength is 0.43MPa, flexural strength is 0.34MPa, adhesive strength is 56kPa, thermal conductivity is 0.053W/m.K, the dry shrinkage rate is 0.23%, softening coefficient is 0.8, the mass loss of the compound material is not more than 5%,strength percentage loss is below 10%, when the cycle of freezing and thawing is 20 and there were no evident changes in appearance. It is now clear that rice straw and discarded EPS material are valuable in manufacturing cement-based composites, and can make contribution to reinforcement of the cementitious composites. In this way, comprehensive utilization of abandoned resources can offer a new way out for agricultural industrialization.
