This paper describes the basic theory about reactive power and harmonics in the power supply and distribution systems, and discusses the problems of how to choose the reactive power compensation and filtering programs. At last, make the illustration of the reactive power compensation and harmonic control into three parts through an engineering application.The first part outlines the relationship between the reactive power and power factor, if the device have low power factor, it will causes reactive power consumption, this will lead to an increase of the capacity of the power supply and distribution equipments, needs more additional equipments and has more power losses, what is more, it will causes a higher voltage drop on the equipments and on the line, leads to bad power supply quality. Reactive power compensation devices can provide some of reactive power to the load, thereby reducing the reactive power supply to the inductive load and improve the power supply voltage and reduce the network losses. There are four Reactive power compensation methods: focused compensation, dispersion compensation on the spot, fixed compensation and separate compensation on the spot. This article compares the advantages and disadvantages of various compensation methods, discusses the application of reactive power compensation device. Determine the reactive power compensation scheme according to the actual situation. How to calculate the capacity of reactive power compensation is proposed.The second part outlines the basic theory of harmonic, and does some research about the characteristics of nonlinear loads contain the switching power and the inductive loads, these loads are the main harmonic sources in the buildings. This paper discusses the electrical equipments and communication systems harmonic hazards and harmonic control methods; discusses the applications of the passive power filters and active power filters, analysis the affection of reactive power compensation devices on harmonics. To calculate the resonance point, harmonic amplification area, harmonic magnification and other parameters, analysis the performance of compensation capacitors of the harmonic of different connection methods, discusses the inhibiting problems in the applications of shunt capacitors. Determine the harmonic control program according to the actual situation.The third part is the simulation work. Through the simulation, make a comparision of the voltage, current, power factor, power losses and harmonics before and after the reactive power compensation and harmonic control. Simulation results show that the reactive power compensation and harmonic control can improve the power factor, voltage quality and reduce the power losses. The investment and return of the device of reactive power compensation and harmonic control is analysed. It is suggested that if the investment is returned within two years, the device is installed on spot.
