With the increasing tension of traditional fossil fuel resources, and the greenhouse effect caused by a large number of CO2 emissions, the change of energy structure is imperative, and the renewable energy generation will becomes the cornerstone of the world in the future. As an integral part of the renewable generation system, the energy storage device plays an important role in improving the power quality, maintaining the system stability, being an emergency backup power, and increasing the economic efficiency. However, the energy storage technologies have the inadequate of lower storage capacity and higher cost. To solve the problem, we propose solutions from two aspects.On the one hand, starting from the side of power generation, the paper selects the Grid-Connected Wind Farm as an example, and gets the minimum required storage capacity of the wind farm by optimizing the power output curve. Though researching the characteristics of wind speed and power output, the paper gives the theory and algorithm of Fourier simulation model and fitting the wind power output curve by it. Then set the objective function that the wind farm could output stably for N hours, the paper gets the minimum required storage capacity of the wind farm so that it can smoothes the output of wind power as far as possible, operates the wind generation units as the schedulable units in the grid, and spends the minimum cost in energy storage device.On the other hand, Starting from the side of user, the paper proposes "virtual storage" technology based on the demand side management (DSM) which can achieve the functions of reducing the required capacity and dropping the cost though implementing the management of energy demand to offset the lack of energy storage, and provides a new approach for the research of energy storage technology. The virtual storage can creates a positive platform between suppliers and customers based on DSM and flexible price strategy. It plays a role of a virtual buffer, which can achieve virtual storage as a storage device. With the development of smart grid and the application of smart meters, it's possible to achieve the function of virtual storage. The paper demonstrates the possibility of implementation and analyzes the impact to storage capacity caused by load forecast. In addition, as an important measure of DSM, the flexible price strategy can realize the function of peak load shifting, both to improve the load factor and ease the load pressure. Finally, the paper builds a smart power utilization system based on TOU electricity price and analyzes the influence though the example.
