| As one of retaining walls, gravity retaining walls have been already applied extensively in civil engineering realm nowadays. Multistep gravity retaining wall is a better choice when it is restricted by terrain. Traditional construction materials of retaining walls include block stones and dressed stones, when soilbags have come into more and more wide use in recent years. Soilbags are PE-made bags filled with soil, cemented-soil, slag, crushed stones, construction wastes etc.At present, the researches about both engineering practices and design methods of multistep gravity retaining wall are few and soilbags filled with crushed stones are also less use as construction material. In this paper, multistep gravity retaining wall and soilbags filled with crushed stones are combined, then the simplified design method for multistep gravity retaining wall is suggested and the feasibility studies about soilbags filled with crushed stones used for materials of retaining wall are conducted. At last, an engineering Project is constructed according to the researches discussed above. The main contents of this paper include: 1) ultimate tensile strength of two different PE-made bags are measured; 2) force analysis on soilbag and estimate for its compression strength are conducted; 3) stability of retaining wall constructed with soilbags are studied; 4) on the basis of Coulomb theory and surcharge of discontinuous distribution, the simplified design method is conducted; 5) based upon engineering practice, design procedure and construction management of multistep gravity retaining wall constructed with soilbags are introduced. The analysis shows that soilbags filled with crushed stones which have higher compression strength can use as construction materials. The design method that takes the dead weight of higher retaining walls for its surcharge is viable. Compared with rubble stone retaining wall, soilbags retaining wall has many merits such as simple and fast construction, low cost, small settlement, materials got easily etc. Also it's a feasible method for high filling engineering. The paper provides the basis for design and construction of similar programming and gives a big boost to the popularity of soilbags around the world. |
