Strength parameters of rock mass had a significant effect on the design of rock engineering and the stability assessment. But the strength parameters of rock mass are affected by many complex factors. To accurately determined the strength parameters of rock mass is one of the biggest challenges in rock engineering research. During the relief and reconstruction period after an earthquake, to determined the strength parameters of rock mass reasonably and precisely is important. This paper synthetically applies theories of experience strength theory such as Hoek-Brown theory and the method of geological strength index (GSI). The main content of this dissertation is as following: analysis of influencing factor on the strength of rock mass; the content and application conditions of Hoek-Brown criteria; demand the values of parameters m and s; the conventional method for determining strength parameters about rock slope; the method of determining the value of GSI.The research finds of this paper are mainly indicated on four aspects as follows:①Through analyzing and summarizing the results of the investigations, the main factors related to the rock strength of the slope that include rock strength, surface characteristics of the structural surface and occurrence in the environment are figured out;②Formula to evaluate translation of the generalized Hoek-Brown criterion parameters into parameters of Mohr-Coulomb criterion;③By introducing the rock integrity coefficient (Kv) and the joint roughness coefficient (JRC), the geological strength index values (GSI) were quantified, so that the values of GSI are more accurate;④Basing on the method that summarizes the determination of various types of strength, with the consideration of the size reduction, a method that determines the rock mass strength parameters based on the GSI values is proposed. The creativity of this article lies in:①According to the way in the FLAC manual that converts the parameters from the narrowed Hoek-Brown criterion to the generalized Mohr-Coulomb criterion, a promotion of the generalized Hoek-Brown criterion was done②Proposed new ways to quantify the value of GSI;③The method of determines the rock mass strength parameters based on the Hoek-Brown theory considered the size effect...
