With the rapidly increasing of the urban population and the development of economy, the building industry is booming in China. During this period, however, energy consumption of buildings increases greatly, which promots the environmental pollution. So this situation does not meet the people's requirements for the high quality of indoor environment and the building energy-saving. Under this background, ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) have been widely investigated and used all around the world due to their characteristics of high efficiency, good stability, energy saving and benefiting the environment. While government around our country treat it as an opportunity for economic development. Therefore the investigation and the application of ground source heat pumps have become one of the hot topics in the field of clean and renewable energy. This paper elaborates principles and classifications of the GSHPs and analyzes the histories and current situations in domestic and international researches. Besides, the article presents the technical characteristics and advantages according to different GSHP systems. Furthermore, the paper makes a comparison between the GSHPs and the traditional central air-conditioning systems through analyzing a practical example, including initial investment cost, annual operating cost and environmental benefits.A borehole heat exchanger (BHE) is crucial for the GSHP systems, which is the characteristic of the GSHP systems compared to the traditional air-conditioning systems. Hence, heat transfer between borehole heat exchangers and soil is the core research of the soil source heat pump systems. Based on previous research, this paper establishes heat transfer modles of borehole heat exchanger groups. While this article explains design steps of BHEs according to a practical GSHP project in one of universities of Tangshan, and GHE groups have been designed in details, including the choice of GHE types and HDPE materials, the determination of the number of siloes and the spacing of GHEs, the calculation of pressure drop of the HDPE groups and the check of their ability to endure pressure. Finally, a complete design plan of GHE groups is obtained, which can be extended to other similar GSHP applications.
