With the development of China's socialist market economy, industries, including the power industry are ushering a period of rapid development. The production equipments have a development tendency of large-scale, continuous and complex.To this end, it is extremely important to ensure equipment security, economy, continuous and efficient operation for each country, and equipment failure status evaluation and fault diagnosis technology are the basis of this assurance.Firstly, this paper summarized the development situation of domestic and foreign equipment failure status evaluation and fault diagnosis technology, based on that, ,take the technology theory development process into different stages, and specified the achievments at each development stage.Secondly, starting from the fundamental theory that modern equipment evaluation methods relied on, briefly introduced the background and significance of "fuzzy math" and "gray system" theory and summarized the comprehensive performance evaluation method and the gray relational thoughts, which are the theories which are closely related with the equipment performance evaluation, and specified the calculation step of absolute correlation of gray and gray-weighted correlation.Again,the paper summarizes three theories of thermal power equipment evaluation which is based on the degree of deterioration, membership,and gray relation, and appropriate improvements and simplification were conducted to make it more practical; Further analysed two weights analysis of the AHP and the PCA method, and compare advantages and disadvantages of the both; proposed gray comprehensive status evaluation method for thermal power equipment, this method both reflects the importance of the equipments in the inherent structure of the system and considers the running state of equipment, which can fully reflect the situation of equipment operation and the effect to the whole system.Finally, evaluate four condensable gas turbine equipment and circulating pump of Unit 3,4 in Zhuhai Golden Bay Power Plant, including evaluation of running, fixed state evaluation and comprehensive evaluation. In the evaluation process, fully considered the various factors affecting the equipment, and comprehensively evaluated the status of the two types of devices.
