Since the first assembly line was built, this mode of production has been widely used in the manufacturing. The efficiency of the assembly line balancing produces an important influence on improving the production capacity and competitive power of the enterprise. To the manufacturing enterprise of the heavy duty car, the automation degree of the operation in the assembly line is not high due to the product features. It strongly depends on the capacity of the operator. The division and distribution of the operation is mostly made by the experience, which may cause waste and bottleneck in working process. The unbalance of the distribution in the assembly line impairs the product efficiency.On the basis of summary on the current situation and features of the build-to-order in heavy duty car, this text firstly makes the balancing model of the heavy duty car mixed-model assembly line for the aim of minimizing the assembly cost. Secondly, it proposed an improved genetic algorithm to solve the built model after summarizing the current situation of balancing solution for mixed assembly line.It adopted unique coding method by operation sequence in genetic algorithm design to study the generation of the initial population; set up the genetic algorithm parameter to test after operation; analyze the effect on calculation validity by selection of each parameter; define different executing time for different scale problem. Finally, it proved this calculation validity by exampling heavy-duty assembly line balancing in an automotive manufacturing company.
