Automobile brake system is the most important initiative safety system. Brake is the enforcer of brake system, whose performance affects the vehicle's safety directly. As the substitution of drum brake, caliper brake has advantages of fine thermal stability, delicate feedback, and so on. But it also has some defects, which they are not resolved completely, such as thermal fade and brake noise.Car, as a fuel consumption vehicle, whether it saves energy or not will directly affect the whole energy-consumption level, our country attaches great importance to it. Because of its great significance, car manufacturers all over the world try their best to lighten the weight of car. As an important component of the car, technique of light-weight should be a direction of development for caliper brake.This paper illustrated disc brake's advantages at beginning, and then introduced the structure of HDB caliper. Applying CAD software UG, CAE software HYPERMESH and ABAQUS to build the finite element model of caliper brake, while the caliper brake meet its own stiffness and strength requirement, did the research to find how to lightening the weight and reducing tape wear efficiently during the design process. After optimization, caliper brake lost 20.693% weight of original and all the performance requirements meet the target.
