Steel pylons have advantages of small size, light weight, good seismic performance, and short construction period, etc. In recent years, Steel pylons have been more and more widely used in bridges in China including the Hong Kong Ting Kau Bridge, The Third Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, Taizhou Yangtze River Bridge, and Ningbo Bund Bridge. It's inevitable that some of the compressed plates in steel pylons are perforated by holes in order to provide access for repair, maintenance and other reasons. The impact on mechanical behaviors of compressed plates caused by perforation can not be ignored, and some strengthening methods are adoped to meet the use and safety requirements. Currently, the mechanical behaviors of typical perforated plates in steel pylon, as well as the strengthening effect of commonly used strengthening methods are not clear. This thesis regards two types of typical perforated plates in steel pylon, i.e. plates with slotted holes and plates with continuous elliptic holes, as research objects. Both compression test and finite element analysis are used to investigate the key mechanical behaviors including stress concentration and elasto-plastic buckling of studied plates. Finally, the thesis achieves the influence laws of hole parameters and stiffener parameters and makes it clear that strengthening effect of commonly used strengthening methods. The major research work includes:1. The development history and current apllication status of steel pylons are reviewed on the basis of existing relevant literatures in domestic and foreign. Two types of perforated plates in steel pylon and the strengthening methods are employed to achieve the research purposes. Research achievement of perforated plates is briefly summarized and problems to be sovled are proposed.2. Uniaxial compression test of perforated plate with simply supported on four edges in the out-of-plane direction mainly including specimen design and test equipment design are detailedly introduced.3. Through the experiment, the stress distribution and ultimate load are abtained to analyze the the influence laws of hole parameters and stiffener parameters. Damage mode, elastic stress distribution and ultimate load of two typical perforated plates are emphatically analyzed in the thesis. Strengthening effect of the different strengthening methods is compared.4. The last research work of this thesis is finite element analysis of perforated plate. The finite modes of two types of perforated plates in steel pylon are established. Based on the test results, the accuracy of finite element modes is verified and parameter analysis is conducted.5. At the end of this thesis, the main research results are summaried and the prospect of the future research directions is put forward.
