Too much information, symbols and signs make modern cities lost theirattraction and intrinsic order, even can't be identified anymore. This paper takesstructuralism and typology as the philosophy background and the previous researchesrelated to space level as the theoretical background, while importing fractal geometryas a new language to describe the concept, the rule and the development model ofspace-level is in order to grasp the stable Gene in the dynamic development and torespond to the changing factors."Level's self- similarity"is not only a phenomenon in nature, but also in everycorner of space and human society. The"self- similarity"exists on the material form, the social structure and the cultural values. In the history of China, the"Space level'sself- similarity"phenomenon is most vividly interpreted. It can be said that the primeessence of traditional Chinese cities is the perfect nature of fractal. This paper focusedon the study of ancient cities'self- similarity with a typical example——wards city, and taking Tang Chang'an for study. The purpose is to identify the concept of spacelevel,to classify the types, to describe the elements, to explore the deep order andsupport system behind its outside form, to explore its social system and cultural roots. This paper further analyzes the foundation and model of modern similarity byexamples.Wecan find that, from Peter Eisenman's"self-referential"and"overlapping"to Hara Hiroshi's"box sets"and"buried"and"reflection"; from"new system of yardaround yard"imported to Juer HuTong's to"multiple courtyard space"incarnated inDeSheng city, all can be interpreted as the re-expression of space level's selfsimilarityin the modern world. From that we sort out the space level's structurt, therelations among levels, the principles and the transformation rules. Fractal is importedto describe the character of space level. Space level's self-similarity connects senseand chaos, logic and random together. It reminds us: modern space should inherit thegene of"space level's self-similarity", control the measure and scale, emphasiz the"nuclear"and"border"on every space level and the detail to bring a rich experienceof space, obey the self-similarity rule under the whole viewpoint, make sure theintegrity and relative independence of each level. The analysis is with the hope ofbringing some inspirations to designner's thinking, urban development, traditioninheriting and future planning.
