It is hard to get rid of cracks in concrete structure due to its characteristics, especially for mass concrete. Lots of efforts have been made by experts all over the world through study and research to avoid cracks harmful to the structure during the design service period. The effective way is to control them while concreting through application of proper measures for the under-construction structure, which is a basis for their control during usage. The excessive long concrete structure, the outcome of requirements for the function and configuration of modern construction, goes beyond the conventional crack control concept through provision of expansion joints and by shortening the length of structure in the codes and standards for design and construction, thus making higher and stricter requirements for the control of cracks. With reference to lots of documents in the fields of periodic magazines, patents, codes and criteria and through summary of the characteristics of reinforced concrete cracks, the root-cause for their occurrence and measures for control as well as participation in their control for an excessive long quay wall in a foreign country, this paper many deals with the aspects given below.Firstly it introduces the characteristics of reinforced concrete cracks and analysis on their root-cause. The formation of cracks is a comprehensive issue in connection with design, construction, material, environment and management.Secondly it Introduces measures for crack control in concrete structure during design and construction and remedy scheme based on its root-cause. The control of cracks in construction is a process of comprehensive settlement which requires a thorough analysis before hand, a key link to control cracks, and remedy with a suitable scheme and material to ensure the reinforced concrete structure in compliance with quality requirements, a last step in the process, when they occur.Thirdly it summarizes the control of cracks in excessive long concrete for a project through combination of theory with practice.
