In China, with the rapid development of power industry, the constructing of power system market, more and more renewable energy integration, even more uncertainties should be considered in the stages of power system planning, operation and security assessment. Risk analysis is a powerful tool to evaluate the influence of the uncertainties, which can both consider the uncertainty and economy facts of the probability events. Based on this method, objective and quantitative reliability evaluation of power system can be explored and weakness of the system can be determined. Such information is very useful both for planners and operators to maintain power system in an even more stable, safe, reliable and economical level.A optimal selection method of power grid operation modes is proposed in this paper based on the theory of risk assessment, which is used to evaluate the energy supply reliability of power grid with considering the occurrence probability and consequence of system failures. Load loss of system failures is gained by linear programming methods considering the active power of generators and load as control variables. Control cost as the optimal objective is minimized in the model. Then the local risk information is used to determine the system weaknesses which are useful to reinforce the system grid in power system planning. Finally the method presented in this paper is validated by IEEE-RTS and Tianjin real power grid.
