Combining the landscape ecology theory and the GIS&RS, is not only the way to thinkabout the urban expansion, but also the premise of human construction system and environmentprotection. This article bases on the rationality and scientific of process of urbanization, from theview points of landscape pattern and urban ecosystem suitability, by using the way of GIS&RStechniques. Nanyang city was taken as an example from analyzed its landscape pattern andevaluated on urban ecosystem suitability to study the future city development.The key points of this article were displayed as following:1The preprocessing of basis data, including classified images by using the ERDAS andENVI, researched on the heat island effect, calculated the NDVI,analyzed the migration route ofwildlife, and used the ARCGIS to build the information database.2Landscape pattern analysis of Nanyang city.Calculating the Landscape indices by usingFRAGSTATS, graphing by using MATLAB and ARCGIS. From the result1)The ratio of allkinds of landscape are: farm landscape is35.40%, green space landscape is26.87%, central citylandscape is25.71%,forest landscape is8.48%,water landscape is3.52%. The farm landscape canbe regarded as the matrix of Nanyang city; the green space landscape has the maximum NPvalue,the minimum MPS value and the maximum PD value, so the green space landscape ishighly fragment; the central city of the urban landscape patch gradually expanding due to theprocess of urbanization, so there exist a maximum patch in urban landscape.2) Thinking aboutthe change of landscape type by urbanization processing.The characteristics of Nanyang city andthe effects of urbanization were explained by using correlation matrix.3The ecological suitability evaluation of Nanyang city. The feature database was built bythe support of geography information system (GIS). According to the theory of Mc Harg'secological planning,14factors of ecological suitability were chosen and the weights of thosefactors were decided by the method of AHP. Finally analyzed those14factors by using theARCGIS9.3. As the result, the area were divided into5levels, and the percentage of the highlysuitable land,suitable land, moderately suitable land,not suitable land and permanently notsuitable land are8.62%,31.21%,30.85%,22.44%,6.88%respectively. The result of aboveprovided the evidences of ecological protection and landscapes exploitation reasonably.4The countermeasures of urban development and ecosystem construction. Base on thelandscape pattern and ecological suitability analysis, bring up the countermeasures of urbandevelopment and ecological system construction optimization. For the urban development: at thearea south of the center city has the low degree of ecological limits, and suits for the developmentof urban construction. For the ecosystem construction: connecting the Lanyin forest park, theDushan park and the Baihe park by the ecological forestry and ecological green space(forrecently) and the construction of south-to-north water project and green ecological protection ofother rivers should be concerned about(for the future).so that the ecological barrier of the central urban area were built and to complete the ecological environment construction of the planningarea.
