Due to the current highway traffic conditions and the use requirement, the base asphalt no longer suitable for paving applications of limestone. Hence, the asphalt must be modified to improve its performance..Different blends of asphalt with a large variety of materials have been studied. Among them, synthetic polymers seem to be the ones that have worked out better. The high cost of synthetic polymers cut down the use of modified asphalt in the road building. Besides,as a quite effective way to dispose the increasing volume of waste appliances plastic were used as modifying agents of the asphalt in the pavement building-solving the environmental problem of the waste appliances plastic and satisfying the need of practice, so the project had both social and economic effectiveness.By referencing the research both abroad and at home, the paper employs the method of combing theory and experiment, learning the present technology in modifying asphalt and in the retrieve of waste plastic and waste appliances plastic, and studying the basic character of raw asphalt. The purpose of the present work is to study the benefit of the waste appliances plastic(such as: PP, PVC, ABS) and SBS, addition to the asphalt performance, in this sense, blends of asphalt and several waste polymers were prepared by high-speed shearing mixer, the softening point test, penetration at 25℃test and ductility at 5℃test were performed to characterize the properties. Besides these three engineering properties, a further micro-structure analysis, was carried out. Choosing the suitable additives types and dosage The effect of the different formula (modifier types and dosage.etc), the processing technic (swell temperature and time, shear mixing speed and time) on modified asphalt were researched,and the process parameters were also optimized..The results indicated that waste polymer modification improved the conventional properties was difficult. On the basis of waste plastics modification,used compound modification between SBS and waste plastics by different ratio. SBS/waste plastics cause increases in softening point and reduction in penetration. Since, the increased penetration, and the increasing softening point temperature indicate demonstrate that the asphalt mixture may be less sensitive to permanent deformation. The modified asphalts display reduced temperature susceptibility than base asphalt. Analysis the experiment results, further study of modification mechanisms were discussed. All those change may be attributed to copolymers absorb the oil fractions which were from the asphalt and swell up, then, derive strength, plasticity and elasticity from physical and cross linking of molecules into a three-dimensional network when polymers blend with asphalt.
