To carry out the research about the dynamic response of the thin plate structure under impact loading plays an important role in solving engineering problems. For example, the ship with impact loading will produce plastic deformation or damage which will lead to lose its original fuction. In recent years, most of the research have been carried out based on the finite element method, it has been developed perfectly. However, this paper will try to use the finite volume method to study the impact dynamic problems. The basic thought of the finite volume method is very simple and it is easy to understand. The process of the discretization is very easy and the discrete equations has definite physical meaning. The conservation of the discrete equations is satisfied in the whole calculation domain, In addition, there is a obvious advantage for the finite volume method that it use display algorithm which is suitable for the analysis of the impact dynamic problems. Therefore,it is the reason the paper use the finite volume method. The basic theory of the finite volume method has been mainly studied and the discrete process has been derived in this paper. The impact dynamic problems of material have been discussed and the basic equations such as mass conservation equation, momentum conservation equation and energy conservation equation have been given in the paper. Furthermore, the strength model and state equation have been discussed, the updating algorithms of stress and pressure have been studied. In the end, the basic process of solving impact dynamic problems of the thin plate structure have been summarized based on the finite volume method. The dynamic response problem of the thin plate structure with impact loading has been solved by computer program in this paper, compared with the finite element method, the results were almost the same. Therefore, the feasibility of the finite volume method has been verified. Besides, the finite volume method can not only be used to the Computational Fluid Mechanics but also be used to the Computational Solid Mechanics. Therefore, the finite volume method will have broad application prospect on the problem of fluid-solid coupling.
