The highways take up a lot of land resources because of wide highway line length. China's land resources are in the situation of serious shortage, so highway builders face the major technical issues including reasonable grasp of the construction and occupation of cultivated land, implementation of intensive land and how to improve land utilization. Among the issues, the technical measures about replacing the embankment slope with retaining wall get the favour of engineering because of the remarkable economic, social benefits. In various types of retaining walls, gravity retaining wall is most widely used due to local materials, simple construction and other characteristics. Meanwhile, gravity retaining wall has many disadvantages such as its own large weight, the large number of multi-masonry and high requirement of foundation bearing capacity. Therefore, in order to reduce the basis cross-sectional area and increase the foundation's overturning and sliding ability, in this paper, the design uses the anchor-pull gravity retaining wall to support high-filling embankment. But its reinforcement effect and force characteristics are not clear. So we carry out the field trials about the third contract of QingLin highway in Shandong Province. According to the theoretical calculation and the field monitoring results, the main conclusions can be put forward:(1)Through comprehensive analysis of all kinds of reinforcement retaining wall's advantages and disadvantages, combined with the third contract section actual engineering characteristics of QingLin highway, the design uses soil grouting anchors to reinforce the retaining walls in order to satisfy the retaining wall long-term durability and anti-seismic performance. Meanwhile, it can improve the retaining wall's sliding resistance and save the number of masonry of retaining wall.(2)According to anchor-pull gravity retaining wall's structure, we put forward the detailed design of the construction process and the field construction organization which effect is good. According to the site condition analysis, we put forward some matters which needing attention and these can be used to guide the construction organization design and quality control of such retaining walls. (3)Along with the increase of the height of the filled soil, retaining walls'lateral earth pressure, basal earth pressure and anchor tension are all increase gradually. However, due to the imposition of soil anchor, retaining walls'lateral earth pressure occur stress mutations between the up and down rows of anchors. This shows that the anchor plays the role of load-bearing of anchor beams and the stress of this location is more concentrated. What's more, the anchor impose restricts the lateral displacement of the retaining wall and achieve the desired purpose.(4)Through the retaining wall's structure design calculation, site monitoring and research, construction procedures, we deepen the understanding of the supporting mechanism of the retaining wall. Studies show that this retaining wall can provide a new cost-effective support measures for the high-filling embankment which has a good prospect.
