As affected by the energy crisis and environmental pressures, the renewable energy is attracting more and more attention. As one of the most promising renewable energy, wind power has experienced rapid development. It becomes more and more important to optimize the power source structure including wind power and construct the appropriate transmission approach for large capacity of wind power. This paper discusses the influence of wind power on power system reliability and how to transmit large capacity of wind power. The main works are organized as follows:(1) The reliability assessment of generation systems including wind power is analyzed. A sub-period wind model is proposed, that is, the parameters of each sub-period are calculated according to its time characteristics. Also, the reason for the difference between the single wind model and the sub-period wind model is given, together with the effect of the correlation between the wind and the load on the reliability calculation.(2) Transmitting pure wind power is analyzed. Firstly, some long distance transmission approaches is discussed, then the annual transmitted power is calculated based on wind power duration curve, and the optimizing standard is given, finally, the transmission price of wind power with the optimized transmission approach is calculated, also, the effect of the transmission length, the loss due to spilling wind and the annual equivalent full load operating hours of the wind farms on the transmission price is analyzed.(3) Transmitting wind power in combination with thermal power is analyzed. Considering the current renewable energy policy and the operation characteristics of thermal plant, a strategy to transmit wind power in combination with thermal power is proposed, which takes both wind power priority and minimum technological output of thermal into consideration. The output characteristic of wind farms is described by the wind power duration curve, based on which the annual transmitted power and the congestion loss due to transmission limitation is calculated. The optimal transmission capacity is calculated by making a balance between congestion loss and the cost of transmission line, also, the negative effect on thermal power while transmitting power in combination with wind power is considered.
