At present, the main forms of energy supply are electricity and natural gas in large and medium-sized cities in China. In addition to the daily life of residents, natural gas is widely used in large public utilities and services industry. With the progress of West-East natural gas transmission project, natural gas, as a kind of stable and relatively clean energy, will play an irreplaceable role in the optimization of cities' energy structure and the development of high efficiency and low carbon economy in a period of time. Among various utilizations of natural gas in cities, Combined Cooling Heating and Power (CCHP) systems has been widely appreciated all over the world for its various, clean and efficient energy supply.According to the structure features and operation needs of CCHP systems, and considering the energy consumption, pollutant emissions, operation cost and other factors, in this paper, the operation strategy and optimal configuration of CCHP systems are studied. The complete and practical optimal schemes and implementation steps are also provided. The main results of this work are reflected in the following respects.(1) An integrated performance criterion, focused on the economy, environmental protection and energy sustainable use, is proposed for the optimization and evaluation of CCHP systems.(2) Based on the integrated performance criterion, an optimal operation strategy is proposed to guarantee the CCHP system running in the optimal operating mode. A hypothetical hotel building is modeled as the reference system to evaluate the proposed strategy. And the effects of electricity price, the natural gas price and other related factors are analyzed.(3) An optimization configuration method is proposed for a compound CCHP system in which the thermal storage tank and electric chiller are included. This method is based on the genetic algorithm and assume that the CCHP system run in the optimal operating mode throughout a year. The goal of this method is to minimum the integrated performance criterion. The hypothetical hotel building is also used to verify the effectiveness of this method.
