With the our country power system scale continually expanding, the user demand on the grid security, stability, reliable operation is becoming higher and more higher. As an important means to keep electric power system safe and reliable, fault current limiter research, has been a focus problem of power system. Several kinds of fault current limiter are introduced in this article. The result shows the application situation and prospects. In this paper the magnetic saturation type fault current limiter and the fault current limiter with thyristor controlled series compensation function are studied. A novel amorphous magnetic saturation type fault current limiter is put forward in this article, this type fault current limiter uses the amorphous material. Iron loss of the fault current limiter with iron cores is little compared the fault current limiter with silicon steel cores. A lot of experiments and the MATLAB simulations on the amorphous magnetic saturation type fault current limiter are made, experiment and simulation results show that the amorphous magnetic saturation type fault current limiter have a good application prospect. In order to reduce more loss of the amorphous magnetic saturation type fault current limiter, and proposed that uses the permanent magnet to replace the DC bias current. After a lot of experiments and research, verify the feasibility of the theory. According to the current situation of permanent magnetic materials and proves that it currently does not have the application conditions, and it is pointed out the future development prospect. Because of the500kV resonance type fault current limiter inspired, the fault current limiter basid on TCSC in distribution power system is presented in this paper. It has a lot of advantages:fault current fast tracking, improving the system dynamic stability, flexible control, improving the end effective voltage of power line. According to the actual problem of Ningxia power system, new type fault current limiter is verified through the simulation experiments, meets the design requirements. All results provide reference for further study.
