The black cutworm Agrotis ypsilon (Rottemberg), is an important cosmopolitanpolyphagous agriculture pest, which has strong ability of migratory and its host plants arevery wide. In this experiment, using three common crops in Shaanxi province to rear blackcutworm and find the effects of different host plants on the development, and try to analysisthe possible reason from the plant content and protective enzyme of blackcutworm afterrearing. Make clear the influencing factors and provide the basis for the production ofprevention.1. It was showed significant influence on the main biological parameters of A. ypsilonwhen it was reared on different kind of plants. The percentage of egg hatching was higherwhen A. ypsilon larvae were feed on Chinese cabbage and soybean,77.48and76.8%%,respectively. It showed that comparing with those fed on corn and Chinese cabbage, A.ypsilon individuals fed on soybean had shorter larval and pupae periods,43.02d and11.87drespectively1019,58.09d,6.25d,0.11,397.12,1.56,2129。The pre-oviposition periodwas shorter and averaged4days when A. ypsilon individuals were fed on corn than onsoybean and Chinese cabbage. Female longevity, fecundity, oviposition period, weight of4th-6thinstars and pupal weight were best when A. ypsilon larvae were fed on soybean, whichwas respectively15.92d,936.67eggs/female,11.83d,0.11g,0.53g,0.67g,0.32g. Netreproductive rate, generation time, double time, innate capacity of increase, index ofpopulation trend, sex radio and gross reproductive rate were higher when A. ypsilon larvae fedon soybean than on Chinese cabbage and corn, which was respectively1019,58.09d,6.25d.0.11,397.12,1.56and2129. The results indicated that soybean was the suitable host plantcomparing with Chinese cabbage and corn.2. The analysis of three host plants nutrient content and water content showed that, therewere significant differences among different host plants, soybean contain much higher solubleprotein than corn and Chinese cabbage, the corn has much soluble sugar and Chinese cabbagecontain much water content compared to other two plants. 3. The superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase activity analyses showed that, theactivity of superoxide dismutase peroxidase and catalase were closely related to the hostplants, ranked as soybean>corn>Chinese cabbage. The comparison of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase among different instars showed that, the activity of superoxidedismutase and peroxidase was positively correlated to instars, but the activity of catalase wasnegative related to them.
