Due to the development of irrigation systems, most of the irrigation channels andchannel buildings have been coverted, which makes the irrigation and drainage managementdepartment can not accurately locate the position of channels or the position of the hydraulicconstruction. Therefore, develop a channel layout collector is necessary.Based on the whole grasping of design, the present project documents the distributioncharacteristics of channel and channel buildings of irrigation canal system. And this paperalso summarizes the required data type and characteristics when performing canal layoutcollection. The canal layout collector is divided into hand-hold devices and graphics softwareof the upper computer and corresponding research for these two parts is performedrespectively. The canal layout collector is used to collect location information of eachrequired channel and picture message of channel buildings. In use, data collectors withhand-held devices can walk along the channel (A drive is used if available.). With the helpof Global Positional System (GPS), latitude and longitude information of each channel issaved. Meanwhile, graphics information of channel buildings is available by using camera.Graphics software of upper computers is used to graphing canal layout and displayingpictures of corresponding channel buildings based on the latitude and longitude information.During the course of the study, the modules thought is adopted, and hand-held devices aredivided into GPS data receiving module, graphics collection module, processor module,man-machine interaction module, data memory module and so forth. Also, graphics softwareof upper computers is divided into canal line graphing and picture display. Based oncompleting functions of each module, we perform the whole design and eventually realize thecollector design of canal system layout.Results demonstrate that, designed collector of canal layout collector can make full useof the GPS characteristics of globalization, all-weather and free of charge, and collect thelatitude and longitude information of each channel and also display graphics information ofcanal buildings conveniently, quickly and freely. The latitude and longitude information ofeach channel is saved in the form of TXT text of SD card. The graphics information of canalbuildings is titled as the latitude and longitude of graphing points and saved in the form ofJPEG pictures of SD card. PC graphics software can use the information collected byhandheld devices, to complete the mapping of the drainage line in the collection canals, the labeling of channel attribute information and the displaying of channel constructions' photosquickly and easily, and to complete the task for the irrigation and drainage engineering andmanagement personnel, which provided a reliable, intuitive canal layout.
