Objective:To explore the prevalence and correlates of chronic diseases of labor population in Binhai area, Tianjin, in order to provide scientific evidence for the development of prevention and control measures of chronic diseases. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted in Binhai New Area, Tianjin from June to July in 2009. The multi-phasic stratified cluster sampling method was adapted. First,5 communities were randomly selected in Tangguo, Hangu, Dagang districts; Second, based on the economic levels,2 neighborhoods were chosen from each communities. Third,130 household were chosen. A total of 3912 subjects were selected as survey sample. Information on demographics, the health status and other factors were collected through face-to-face questionnaire interview. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs of chronic diseases in relation to corresponding factors.Results:1 Among 3912 participants,470 participants were patients with chronic diseases, including 199 males and 271 females. The prevalences of chronic diseases in total population, males and females were 12.01%,10.21% and 13.08%, respectively. The major chronic diseases were circulatory system diseases (41.28%), motion system diseases (17.23%), digestive system diseases (11.28%), endocrine, and nutrition and metabolism system diseases (11.06%).2 The results of logistics regression analysis showed that old age, female gender and high economic level were risk factors of chronic diseases. Comparing with persons aged 15-34 years, the ORs (95% CIs) of chronic diseases for persons aged 35-44 years,45-54 years and 55-59 years were 4.807(3.276-7.053),10.327 (7.203-14.806),19.556(13.217-28.936), respectively. Females (OR=1.410,95%CI: 1.161-1.713) was related to a higher risk of chronic diseases than males. In the urban citizens, the prevalent of chronic diseases increased with the rising economic levels, the OR (95% CI) of chronic diseases in the groups with average monthly incomes of 5000-9999 RMB and=10000 RMB were 1.795(1.369-2.353) and 1.789(1.279-2.503) respectively comparing with the group of<5000 RMB/month income. 3 88% of patients with chronic diseases received medical treatment. Among the patients with untreated chronic diseases, poverty was the main reason for their nontreatment..42.62% of the patients with chronic diseases were treated in district hospitals,38.26% of the patients with chronic diseases were treated in community health service center and health service station. The average health cost for a patient with chronic diseases was 8254 RMB per year, accounting for 60% of his/her personal consumption expenditure and 14% of his/her family consumption expenditure.4. Television, broadcast programs, books and newspapers were the main avenues to get health knowledge. Whereas the proportion of health knowledge get through doctor was less than a quarter. Conclusion:The prevalence of chronic diseases in labor population, in Binhai new area, Tianjin was high, which will affect the physique of labor workers and economic development. Primary health services plays the important role in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases and will be strengthened in the future.
