Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a severe pathogen that induced deadly diseases such as hemolyic uremic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpurea.Fuzhuan brick tea is a unique microbial-fermented tea. It has been a favorite for the frontier minorities living in northwestern China throughout history. This tea is not only a kind of beverage, but also a member of medicines. The mice divided into five groups, that is, normal control group, infection model group by E. coli O157:H7 and three treated groups. For the treated, mice that infected with E. coli O157:H7 were administered intragastrically with low, moderate and high dosage of water extract from Fuzhuan brick-tea for consecutive 10 days. Some haematological, histopathological and immunological indexes were determined. In comparison with the model group, water extract from Fuzhuan brick-tea could significantly promote amount of blood platelet, total protein, albumin, and reduce the level of triglyceride, aspartate aminotransferase. serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. Water extract from Fuzhuan brick-tea at moderate and high dosages could repair injured mucosa and relief inflammation based on histopathological examination of renal, gastric, duodenal, ileal and colonic. For the immune functions, water extract from Fuzhuan brick-tea at moderate and high dosages could significantly promote the thymus index and serum hemolysin titers. significantly increase total number of CD4+ and CD8+T-lymphocytes in intestinal tissue; water extract from Fuzhuan brick-tea at low, moderate and high dosage could enhance mononuclear macrophage immune function. Water extract from Fuzhuan brick-tea at moderate and high dosages could eliminate the special bands and increase the diversity of Lactobacillus, Bacteroides and Clostridium cluster IV in DGGE profiles. The results above-mentioned proved that Fuzhuan brick-tea could recover impaired liver function and renal function induced by E. coli O157:H7. protect target organs, enhance the immune function, regulate intestinal microflora. The present study elucidated the therapeatic effect of Fuzhuan brick-tea on mice infected with E. coli O157:H7. and provided theoretical base for using Fuzhuan brick-tea to regulate intestinal function.
