Objective:To explore whether vasculogenic mimicry (VM) exists in cervical squamous cell carcinoma or not and to elucidate the relationship between the expression of EphA2 and VM.Methods:The paraffin specimens of 60 patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma and 20 patients with chronic cervicitis were collected. The presence of VM was observed by immunohistochemical and histochemical double staining of CD34 and PAS. The expression of EphA2 protein was detected by immunohistochemical staining.Results:1. Positive rate of VM was significantly higher in cervical cancer than that in chronic cervicitis (P< 0.05).2. VM in lowly to moderately differentiated cervical cancer (47.9%) was higher than that in well differentiated (8.3%) and it was significantly related to FIGO stage and lymphnode metastasis (P<0.05).3. Positive rate of EphA2 was significantly higher in cervical cancer than that in chronic cervicitis (P< 0.05)。4. The expression of EphA2 protein was related to the pathologic class and lymphnode metastasis (P< 0.05).5. There was a positive association between the expression of EphA2 and VM (r =0.362, P< 0.05).Conclusions:1. VM exists in cervical squamous cell carcinoma, and overexpression of EphA2 may induce the formation of VM channels.2. VM and overexpression of EphA2 are important biological markers for invasion and metastasis of cervical cancer.3. The combined detection of VM and EphA2 has an important role in predicting the progression of cervical cancer.
