Objective To investigate the effects of montelukast plus inhaled budesonide on airway remodeling and the expression of IL-33 in asthmatic SD rats. Methods Fifty rats randomly divided into 5 groups: control group (group A), asthma group ( group B) , montelukast group ( group C), budesonide group (group D) and combination group( montelukast and budesonide, group E). Each group consisted of 10 rats. A asthmatic rat modeling was established by ovalbumin sensitizing and challenging. Drug intervention group were intervened by drugs at the 61st day after the first day of challenging. We determined the airway insufflation pressure (AIPs) and the levels of IL-33 in serum and BALF by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of all groups at the 80th day. Observation the lung histopathological changes and the expression of collagen by HE and Masson staining. Results The indicators of AIPs, airway remodeling and inflammation in groups A, C, D, E were significantly different compared with that in group B (P < 0. 05). Improvements in group E was the most obvious. The levels of IL-33 in serum and BALF in group E reduced most obvious. Conclusions Montelukast combined with inhaled budesonide can significantly reduce the AIPs, airway remodeling and the levels of IL-33 in serum and BALF.
