ObjectiveTo provide background materials and theoretical basis for AIDS health education in comprehensive vocational colleges through investigation into the level of knowledge about AIDS among the students of Zaozhuang Vocational College of Science and Technology and to find the deficiency in AIDS health education.MethodsBased on the questionnaire by the office of the State Council AIDS Prevention Committee, a survey was designed, covering the population features, the basic knowledge of AIDS, the main approach to obtain AIDS knowledge and the views, attitudes and sexual practice toward AIDS. Data were collected by filling out the questionnaires anonymously and statistic analysis was performed by SPSS 13.0.ResultsThe 1162 surveyed,88.047% have the basic knowledge related to AIDS. Regarding the knowledge mastered, college, medical, senior and low family-income students were superior to secondary school students (p<0.01), non-medical (P<0.01), junior (P<0.01), high family-income students (P<0.01), respectively. Regarding the correct rate (54.04%) of the attitude towards AIDS infectors and patients, College and low family-income students were respectively superior to secondary school students (p<0.01) and high family-income ones (P<0.01).86.69% of the surveyed had no sexual practice. The AIDS knowledge primarily were obtained from broadcast and television, magazines and newspapers, propaganda and exhibition, and the Internet, which account for 68.40%,81.15%,69.91%, and 67.12%, respectively. The AIDS knowledge were secondly obtained from schoolmates and friends, teachers' classes, other sources, and special lectures, with respective percentage of 43.72%,38.04%,26.42% and 24.87%. The AIDS knowledge that the students wanted to know most was how to prevent and its infection mode, with the percentage of 86.32% and 77.11%.The students' main approach to gain AIDS knowledge were broadcast and television, Internet, magazines and newspapers, and doctors, with percentage of 64.37%,62.91%,56.63%,49.23%, respectively. The second approach was from propaganda and exhibition, special lectures, teachers' classes, friends and other approach. Age, gender and specialty are the main impact factors involving the understanding about AIDS and the attitude towards AIDS infectors and patients.ConclusionThe students had a relative knowledge of AIDS, but meanwhile they also had wrong understandings of AIDS to some extent, which resulted in some unnecessary psychological fear. It suggested that the colleges help students to fully understand the knowledge of AIDS scientifically and systematically, hold a fairly correct attitude towards AIDS patients and infectors and enhance publicity on AIDS prevention and treatment.
