Objective: To know the status of tobacco control in internet cafes in the Jingyue Economic Development Zone of Changchun and then supply evidence for establishing the measures of tobacco control.Methods: We observed the 44 internet cafes for 3 days from 18 o'clock to 21 o'clock, then filled the tables. We investigated all the 96 staffs in the internet cafes for the status of tobacco control and made them fill the tables. We held up 306 people who surfed the internet in the cafes based on the size of the internet cafes and made them fill the tables in order to know the condition of tobacco control in the internet cafes.Results: All the 44 internet cafes have publicized materials and Smoking Signs. We found cigarette butts in 52.3% cafes, cigarette smell in 43.2% cafes and the men who was smoking in 40.9% cafes. 40.6% of the staffs smoked and 25.0% had taken part in the knowledged-based training of tobacco control. The awareness rate of the harm of tobacco was low. Only 46.9% staffs considered that the cafes they worked in executed the rule well. We found no significant difference between male and female staffs about their attitudes to tobacco control (P>0.05) . There was significant difference between staffs with different education background about their attitudes to tobacco control (P<0.05). There was association between smoking and the attitudes to tobacco control (P<0.05). There was possibly no association between the knowledged-based training of tobacco control and the attitudes to tobacco control (P>0.05). 38.6% of the men who surfed the internet didn't know that whether there was Smoking Signs in the cafes or not. 64.4% of them had seen someone smoking in the internet cafes. Only 7.5% of them had been provided a giving-up smoking service. We found no significant difference between men and women who surfed the internet in the cafes about their attitudes to tobacco control (P>0.05) . There was significant difference between people with different education background about their attitudes to tobacco control (P>0.05). There was association between smoking and the attitudes to tobacco control (P<0.001).Conclusion: It's not optimistic for the status of tobacco control in the 44 internet cafes in the Jingyue Economic Development Zone of Changchun. The coverage rate of the knowledged-based training of tobacco control is low. We still need to take effective measures to implement the rule of tobacco control in public places.
