Objective To study the significance of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) mRNA expression in ovarian epithelial cancer.Method Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed to detect the expression of EGFR and STAT3 mRNA in 13 cases of normal ovaries(in 13normal ovarian tissues),11 benign ovarian tumors and 43 ovarian epithelial.(?)cers, and then the correlation between them was analyzed. Results EGFR and STAT3 mRNA expression in ovarian epithelial cancers was significantly higher than in normal ovarian tissues and benign ovarian tumors (P<0.05). In ovarian epithelial tissues, the EGFR and STAT3 mRNA expression was related with surgical stages their expressions in III and IV stages were higher than in I and II stages (P<0.05), but their expressions have no relations with patient ages, tumour differentiation degrees, histological types and lymph node metastasis (P>0.05). There is a positive correlation between EGFR and STAT3 mRNA expressions(r= 0.42, P<0.01).Conclusion EGFR,STAT3 and EGFR -STAT3 signaling pathway play an important role in the occurrence and development of ovarian cancer, the detection of EGFR and STAT3 are expected to be an indicator in early diagnosis and staging of ovarian cancer, and may become a new therapeutic target.
