High altitude cerebral edema, a kind of acute disease caused by lacking of oxygen and pressure in plateau areas, threatens the life and health of highland people. Nowadays, the main diagnosis method is through observing the signs characteristics of the patients and has high misdiagnosis rate. So it is significant that the diagnosis method is accurate and fast. This article probes into the method of diagnosing high altitude cerebral edema based on MRI inspection. The pathogenesis of high altitude cerebral edema is still unclear so far. Most researches have proved that high altitude cerebral edema is mainly the blood brain barrier, function and structure barrier, which leads to the increasing of vascular permeability and forms vasogenic brain edema along with cytotoxic brain edema. Since vasogenic brain edema is mainly embodied in cerebral white matter edema, high altitude cerebral edema is also the cerebral white matter edema.MRI is the imaging technology which makes use of hydrogen atoms of human tissues. Nuclear magnetic resonance phenomenon occurs and magnetic resonance signals are produced by the atoms which are stimulated by RF pulse in the magnetic field. These data are collected and handled by the computer to reconstruct the human tissues. It can show the location and seize of the lesion clearly. SPM8processing software needs to process the MRI in order to carry out the comparison and studying among several subjects. It contains the pre-handling such as slice timing, realignment, normalisation, smoothing, and the handling that segments the brain tissue into cerebral grey matter, white matter and cerebrospinal fluid. In order to study the difference of brain tissue content between the normal subjects and high altitude cerebral edema patients, this article processes and analyses the MRI data of the thirty-two subjects. Thirty-two subjects contain five high altitude cerebral edema patients and twenty-seven normal subjects. The research carries out pre-processing and segmentation of the head MRI of the subjects by using SPM8and calculates the volume cerebral grey matter, white matter and cerebrospinal fluid of every subject by writing procedures which can calculate the brain tissue volume. After mathematical statistical analysis, we come to the conclusion that the content of cerebral white matter of the high altitude cerebral edema patient is higher than that of the normal subject, which verifies the theory that high altitude cerebral edema belongs to vasogenic brain edema and that testing the content of cerebral white matter can acts as the diagnosis method of high altitude cerebral edema.
