Background: To compare the outcomes of patellar comminuted fracturestreated with patellar conformal compression and tension band wire.Methods:47patients with patella comminuted fracture were treated inthis hospital from September2010to June2011, which were randomly dividedinto two groups.19patients were treated with patellar conformal compression(patellar conformal compression group) as experimental group and28patientswere treated with tension band wiring (tension band wiring group) as controlgroup. The anesthetic time, the operation time, blood loss, time to fractureunion, complications and the range of motion of the affected knee afteroperation were recorded and compared. The functional recovery of the kneewas assessed following Bostman Scoring system and analyzed statistically. Results: There were no statistically significant differences on anesthetictime, operation time, blood loss, and time to fracture union between the twogroups(P>0.05). The patients in Group I achieved better knee activities andfunctional recovery than patients in Group II at8-months follow up (P<0.05).The complication rate of Group I was significantly less than Group II(P<0.05).Conclusion: The patellar comminuted fractures treated with patellarconformal compression can achieve favorable functional recovery of theaffected knees with less postoperative complications, which is a treatment ofchoice for such fractures.
