No one would dispute the remarkable influences that a large number of vocabularies have been exerting on language learning. However, vocabulary teaching and learning is still unsatisfactory in China at present; it becomes a headache for most language learners and hinders the improvement of other language skills. From the perspective of working memory, this paper aims to explore an effective and efficient way both to enlarge vocabulary size and to improve learners' vocabulary performance. In particular, the present study is to provide possible answers to the question—whether phrase-based vocabulary learning strategy is beneficial to non English majored college students' vocabulary development, especially the productive performance.Based on the theories of working memory, the phrase-based vocabulary learning strategy is put forward in the thesis. An experimental survey aiming to testify the effectiveness of the proposed learning strategy is conducted in order to obtain scientific statistics. The marked differences of the means between the three Experimental Groups and the Control Group in the post-test indicate that the target learning strategy has a significant effect on vocabulary learning, esp. on its productive performance.
