The Syllabus for Chinese Teaching in Korean Senior High Schools, which is the basis of Chinese language teaching, is of great significance in directing classroom teaching and textbook compilation. Currently, the 7th Syllabus for Chinese Teaching in Korean Senior High Schools and its Revised Version are in use, both of which aim to cultivate communicative competence. However, an overemphasis on communicative competence has led to the neglect of grammar teaching. As a result, the Syllabus lacks the standards and contents on grammatical system, which has not only given rise to the embarrassment of Chinese language teachers during the practical classroom teaching, but also the failure of those textbook editors to formulate a standard grammatical system due to the random selection of grammar items. In fact, abundant illustrations can attest to the lack of the systematicness of grammar items in five textbooks approved by the Korean Ministry of Education for Chinese teaching in Korean senior high schools, such as<Chinese 1> and <Chinese 2>.Apart from the neglect of its importance, the study on the Syllabus of Chinese Teaching in Korean Senior High Schools is still rare, especially on grammar teaching. Instead of listing grammar items, the current 7th Syllabus of Chinese Teaching in Korean Senior High Schools (hereafter referred to as "the 7th Edition") merely suggests grammar points with illustrative sentences for communicative function (hereafter referred to as "illustrative sentences"). Therefore, the only way to grasp the grammatical system of the Syllabus is to analyze those illustrative sentences, and then find out and sum up the grammatical structures and points underlying them. This thesis will analyze the grammar items reflected in the illustrative sentences in the 7th Edition and the basic expressions for communication (hereafter referred to as "basic expressions") in its Revised Version, according to A-Grade Syllabus for HSK Grading Criteria and Grammar Grade (hereafter referred to as "A-Grade Syllabus"). The reasonableness of selection and arrangement of grammar items will be tested through contrastive and comparative analysis. To enhance the reliability of this study, the research results on the syllabus for teaching Chinese as a foreign language are also referred to. Furthermore, through contrast and comparison on the grammatical syllabus for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (mainly by A-Grade Syllabus and Syllabus for Elementary Chinese Teaching for Foreign Students) and on grammar items in Chinese textbooks for Korean senior high schools, we can better improve the Syllabus for Chinese Teaching in Korean Senior High Schools. This study is a theoretical one based on contrastive and comparative analysis. Considering the inherent defects of theoretical studies, the questionnaire method is also adopted to survey the teachers and students in Korean senior high schools, with which we can check whether the current Syllabus of Chinese Teaching in Korean Senior High Schools is satisfactory or not. This study will provide scientific basis for the establishment of Chinese grammar system and the formulation of Korean High School Chinese Grammar Syllabus.
