This paper is a combination of the study of vocabulary learning and cognitive module. The author tries to study lexis through cognitive module. The research adopts the framework of cognitive module developed by Chomsky (Vivian & Mark Newson) in carrying out the analysis and discussion of vocabulary learning. By taking the cognitive module approach to lexical learning, this study is creative and significant. It is assumed that:(1) Cognitive module has hierarchy (Willem J. M. Levelt 2008):lexis information is distributed in different levels in the module, and different lexical input will alter the remarkable feature (property) of the module structure and lexis output (Zhao Yanchun 2003:259).(2) Within the same lexical input, different structures (distribution of the nodes) of the cognitive module have different effects on lexical output. (Vivian Cook & Mark Newson 2000:48-49).The author aims to test the hypotheses through two experiments which mainly focus on the test of participants' remembering of the sensory verbs and conducting a survey about learning factors.The subjects are the fresh students from Tianjin University of Science and Technology. Data and samples for the study are collected mainly from the dictionary Collins Cobuild Learner's Dictionary (2000), and other auxiliary materials. With the aid of PLS and CS 14.0 on data processing, correlation analyses of pre-test, mid-test and post-test of experimental groups are presented. The findings from the experiment support the hypothesis that hierarchy exists in the cognitive module and the interior structure of the module can be changed by different input. At the same time, the internal structures of the module have effects on lexical output.The study aims to help learners have a better understanding of the function of the cognitive module and the process of vocabulary learning. What factors contribute to the process of learning? The study tries to help English learners get access to the proficiency of English.
