In the recent years, with the proliferation of international communication, the frequency and depth of English-Chinese contact intensfied increasingly. The written and spoken Chinese are influenced by Westenization. As Mr.Wangli predicted, "the Europeanizd grammar has not been limited……we cannot see the end of the Europeanization." Since then, predecessors engaged themselves in the study of Europeanization. This dissertation plans to follow the steps of forefathers, contributing to this research field. The Chinese-English contact can be dated backed as early as the first half of 17th century. The discussion developed in the late of 19th century. After the May 4th Movement, with the advance of vernacular movement ,this research field has been emphasized heavily. Wang Li(1954)supposed that the Europeanized grammar is of great significance. Based on the Dream of the Red Chamber and the story of child heroes as the standard Chinese, Wang employed the synchronic and diachronic method to compare the Chinese traditional grammar with Europeanized grammar, and depicted the Westenized syntax. The following study of descendants seldom achieved his accomplishment. In the 20th 50s-80s, the proliferation of loan words boosted the speed of theory study. In the 90s of last century ,the scholars of the mainland spread the domain to morphological and syntactic aspects. The quantity of published papers is considerable but most are descriptive. The relevant monographs are much fewer. Mr.He Yang "study on the Europeanized grammar of contemporary Chinese" compared the All Men Are Brothers, a popular fiction by Shi Nai'an, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms with modern Chinese to demonstrate the Westenised Chinese phenomena, respectively from the angle of oral and written stylist. Actually, the frontier of this field mainly centralized in HongKong, Taiwan Province, where ethnic Chinese live and bilingualism or multilingualism forces. Because of the predominant role of English in HK, the written Chinese has been influenced and varied largely. Besides the code-mixing, the foreign words and syntax structure has been borrowed from English in abundance .Mr.shi and Zhu delved in this domain systematically. All in all, the study of Westenization of Chinese has achieved high levels. With respect to this phenomena, there exsit advocators and opponents. However, their theoretical underpinnings and practice laid solid foundation for the future research. This thesis employed qualitative analysis to display the fruits of predecessor research, point out their merits and demerits .Firstly, we examined the borrowing morphemes and comb the historical fabric of new affixes ,such as"—hou,—feng,—chong,ya—"and so forth. Then, depicting the attributes of semantic loans ,we clarified the discrepancy of nature essence of narrow approach and broad approach. Secondly, this dissertation concluded the types of Chinese syntax variations, focusing on word categories transformation. Since Chinese is lack of morphology, the transformation between word classes cannot be identified immediately. We investigated the word categories switching cited by Shi and Zhu critically and seek the theoretical explanations from the respect of Chinese itself. Last but not the least, We introduced the theory underpinning, language contact and interference and multi-competence theory to illustrate the influence upon second language acquisition. My dissertation The study of this research did not reconciled to the traditional authority theory resolution. By introducing the cognitive linguistics and second language acquisition ,we delved in the mechanism of Europeanization to enhance the omni- directional recognition of Chinese evolution. To some extent, the thesis compensated for the drawbacks of the relevant problems. Because of lack of corpus materials and the standard boundary of modern Chinese, there exist some shortcomings. As mentioned before, It is hoped that this thesis will contribute to the study of Europeanization of Chinese to afford new angles of future research.
