Don Delillo, an American famous writer, is called the representative of the postmodern literature. After the publishment of his masterpiece White Noise, this novel immediately shocked the whole American literary circle and the next year Don Delillo got the National Book Award for this novel. In this novel, Delillo used the technique of"copy"to show American life in the postmodern society. With the sharp language, Don Delillo spares no efforts to present spiritual dilemma that modern man suffers, to find out the solutions to"the sickness of today", to find some balance between the material wealth and one's mind and to warn people in modern times about the spiritual crisis. Delillo's exploration to people's spiritual sickness demonstrates that Delillo has got strong awareness of spiritual ecology. His awareness of spiritual ecology originates from two turnings of the philosophy in the early and late part of 20th century, from inward turning of literature, from the turning of ecology to the humanity, from continual spiritual pressure due to all kinds of political events in 20th century, from spiritual sickness because of over-developed science and technology in the post-industry society and from Delillo's minority background and his Catholicism education in his childhood. The core value of spiritual ecology is systematic balance of one's mind. Therefore, the relationship and communication are very much valued by spiritual ecology. Characters in White Noise suffer from all kinds of spiritual sicknesses: the alienation makes characters suffer from the identity crisis; because of the desire for the commodity and high-technology, people degenerate with the materialization as a result they pursue the invisible commodity; both the absence of belief and the unique"post-nuclear"family in the postmodern society influence people with vacuous mind; people can not control their fate so that they are incompetent. Man loses every link to others. Man's spiritual world is a waste land. Man has become the puppet without the spirit. With more and more attention given to the environmental problems and man's spiritual crisis, it is of special significance to study Don Delillo's White Noise from the perspective of spiritual ecology. The efforts provide spiritual ecology and Don Delillo's studies with new hints. At the same time, they are meaningful to solve the realistic problems, relieve man's spiritual crisis and construct a harmonious society.
