William Wordsworth was the pioneer of the English Romantic Movement in the nineteenth century. He called himself a worshipper of nature and he had composed enormous poems to praise the beauty of nature. However, the rapid progress in science and technology brought by the Industrial Revolution caused disastrous damages on the environment despite the material prosperity. The process of urban civilization destroyed the harmony between man and nature.Such destruction even spread into man's spiritual world. They were losing their nature and suffering from the spiritual crisis while chasing after the material production. It had become a severe issue for man to regain spiritual freedom and repair the estranged relationship between man and nature.Wordsworth had foreseen the crisis at the beginning of industrial civilization. He had no faith in science and rejected man's endless exploitation of nature. He regarded nature as the best teacher for man's development. Therefore,he was considered as the first romantic poet with ecological consciousness. This thesis, with the approach of spiritual ecology, attempts to explore the spiritual ecological consciousness in Wordsworth's natural poems, which could enrich the eco-criticism,providing better understanding of this theory and also offer a solution to man's spiritual crisis at modern times. In Wordsworth's accounts, human beings, with the healing power of nature, were able to return to their spiritual paradise. And such spirits could help man with their rebuilding the harmonious relationship between them and nature, even to keep the balance and stability of an ecosystem.
