Research On Anna Karenina's Film Adaption

Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) (refers as Tolstoy at the following) was one of the most great realists in the Russian history, whose works were filmed for many times, of which the monumental work, Anna Karenina, was received the most popular focus. The novel Anna Karenina presents the general society view of 19th century of Russia through its intensive ideological content and excellent artistic achievements. Also, the different film editions from different eras or nations can still present diverse artistic worlds and lead the experiences of crossing the time, due to the expressions against original work and exploitation of screen skills. This paper aims at analyzing the reason of why Anna Karenina can be transferred from a novel to movies, the procedure of its screening, the characteristics of different movie editions.This study is focusing on the film adaption of Anna Karenina, and is trying to provide experiences and theoretical support. Based on the purposes above, this paper includes three main parts, which are the film adaption conditions based on the original work, the transfer procedure from novels to movies, and diversities and reasons among different editions.The first chapter is focusing on the analysis of adaption conditions of Anna Karenina. The starting point is the novel's attractive scenarios. The scenes that words reprented and the specific screen skill suggested to directors are the foundation of being screened. Besides, the diversity way of expressions make it conveniences for the pictures'shoot and consistence. All the elements within the novel are the main reasons of filming this literature work.The second chapter analyzes the screen procedure based on Anna Karenina. This procedure is mainly the transformations from text description towards film description, and from text symbols towards film symbols. Based on the description differences of novels and films, the transformation of description is to refine the theme and rearrange the structures. On the other hand, the transformation of symbols is the visualization of scenarios and personalities, which relied on the filming techniques.The third chapter is the comparison among different adaption editions based on a same novel. The classification is according to the difference of adaption models and followed the analysis of representive edition of each category. The first is the referencing adaption model exampled as the 1935 US edition and the 1967 USSR edition. The second model is proximate adaption as the 1955 Chinese edition. This two kinds of adaption models show two different concepts, which are loyal to original ideas and re-explanation. At the same time, due to the different adaption models and nation or aging elements, films appeared variable presences.
