Since 1872, when the first Chinese child students set off to their voyage of study in America, while they were exploring a completely different world, their homeland was in the duration of many upheavals. After the May Fourth Movement, more efficient promotion of western concepts had reached citizens of the nation, and more esteem for European society, culture and art are gained. Study at Europe and America became a different trend, the"Western Paradise Pilgrimage", with"Go Fuso". France as the main destination in Europe or Japan adjacent to the east, wherever they should have gone they returned and devoted themselves into revitalization of Chinese fine art. Most of them advances Chinese Art through participate in societies and set up schools. Those art educators showed their decision and ambition of revitalize Chinese Art by their own practices. Modernism was just introduced into China under such circumstance. Art societies of modernism, represented by Storm Society (Juelan She), actually borrowed the form of visual expression and went as deep as social system and philosophical ideological trend through study and exploration of western modernism art, moreover they promoted a newer and deeper revolution and development to a large extent. This essay discusses modernism of 30s last century, researches its emerging, development and function, and also explores the reason it declined and its influence and revelation to Chinese contemporary art.
