The Biographies of the Exemplary Women written by Liu Xiang of Western Han remonstrates with women's morality from different perspectives, accompanied with his painting album The exemplary women, presented to Han Chen Empire. Since then, there are more and more paintings of exemplary women coming out consistently, especially in Jing Dynasty. There are two versions of exemplary women handed down. One is exemplary women of benevolence and wisdom(Song dynasty facsimile, National Palace Museum, Beijing),the other is a painting album carved by Yu Family Qing You Tang of Southern Song, duplicated by Ruanyuan of Qing Dynasty, both of them are passed down under the author name of Gu Kaizhi. Nowadays, several controversies over the genuine author and the uncertain time still exist and promote the diversity in study. Based on predecessors'research, I try to discuss the connections between two versions of exemplary women, as well as the genuine authors and origin of the two versions from a brand new perspective.Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the text of the exemplary women.In Chapter Two and Three, I make an analysis and research on exemplary women of benevolence and wisdom to identify the exact accomplishment time. In Chapter Four, according to the catalogues of Song Dynasty, I try to analyse the paintings from the Yu Family's the Biographies of the Exemplary women.Through the analysis, I draw the conclusion that neither exemplary women of benevolence and wisdom nor the Yu Family's the biographies of the exemplary women is created by Gu Kaizhi, meanwhile, both of the two versions share the same origin- The Biographies of the Exemplary Women written by Liu Xiang.
