In the modern literary history of China, He Qifang was a highly acclaimed writer with unique style and artistic charm. Beyond any doubt, his literary works contributed a lot to his fame. Still it remains palpable that his another source of celebrity was the distinctive literary adventure he embarked on, adventure which was shaped by the contradiction between his progressive thoughts and regressive art. This mysterious contradiction which was labeled as "the phenomenon of He Qifang" arrested the attention of vast masses. The course of his life and literary creation never runs smooth and great efforts had been made to keep a balance between the reality and the literary creation. Accordingly, the fluctuations he experienced in real life were reflected in his literary works. And the tussle inside him and his multiple identities also gave birth to his new array of literary works.Studies about He Qifang were greatly added to due to comprehensive and dedicated researches conducted by scholars in recent years. While studies carried out from the perspective of the interaction between his real life experience and the changes in the style of his poems remains relatively scarce. The thesis starts with the changes in his real life and the corresponding changes in the style of his poems, aiming to probe into the diversity and the paradox lurked in his literary works.The first section of this thesis depicts the inner struggle before his departure to Yan'an, the abandonment of the romantic feeling of the youth and the acceptance of reality. The three elements just mentioned are the reasons behind the diversity displayed in his literary works. The second section goes to the demonstration of the contradictory coexistence between the classic and the modern, the romance and reality and also the conflicts generated by his multiple identities, all of which can be sensed from his works.The life experiences of the author serve as the adhesive which bond together the two sections and enable us to get a full picture of the diversity displayed in his works. The legacies we inherited from He Qifang are not simply his literary woks and the enlightenment obtained via reflections we made on" the phenomenon of He Qifang" but also the thinking:how to balance the relationship between literature and politics,to remind us:protect your independence and freedom when searching for the ideal.
