Translation is regarded as an effective way in understanding the world and the uniqueness of different disciplines. And the research of translation made by the scholars usually tends to be combined with a certain specific field. The translation of legal terms is an important issue in the academic study concerning legal translation. The accuracy and relevance of legal terms directly determines the implementation and effect of the legal provisions in another language. With the development of society and economy, more demands and requirements are laid on the translation of legal terms. However, the systematic study on legal terms translation is seldom seen. Making a general survey of the current translated works, people may find that almost all these works have a common problem of not studying thoroughly. This is why the author of the thesis attempts to do some research on legal term translation from the angle of Relevance Theory. Based on Relevance Theory, the current thesis aims to make some contribution to the study of legal term translation.Relevance Theory (RT) focuses on the study of translation from the angle of cognitive theory. The process of translation is a double ostensive-inferential process, in which the translator tends to achieve the optimal relevance. Therefore, the principles of relevance, the optimal relevance, the ostensive-inferential process and even the theory of Adaptation are applied in the study of legal term translation. Sperber & Wilson (2001) and their student Gutt (2000) have made a variety of researches on the Relevance Theory. In this thesis, the achievement and theoretical contributions of the scholars at home and abroad will be applied. The first chapter of the thesis refers to the general introduction to the main purpose and objectives of this paper. As the beginning of the whole thesis, this part concludes the basic situation of the translation of legal terms, including some notions and concepts of it as well as its importance difficulty and features. The second chapter is the review of the previous study on legal translation. The researchers and their representative theories on legal translation will be discussed in this chapter. In this section, the author of the thesis will conclude people's reorganization of the legal term translation and the relevant opinions and theories proposed by the scholars in pertinence. The legal term translation from the perspective of the relevance theory constitutes the main part of this content. The third chapter is the framework of the thesis. Principles and theories of relevance theory will be discussed here. In this part the author gives a detailed discussion about relevance theory including the major principles of relevance theory, context in relevance, ostensive-inferential communication, optimal relevance and its relationship to translation. It also analyzes briefly the application of the relevance theory in translation. This part has laid a theoretical foundation to the study of this thesis. The forth chapter combines the relevance theory with the legal term translation. It discusses some important and useful theories in the legal term translation such as the equivalence theory and the comparative law approach. And then, it concludes the superiority of the relevance theory in the legal term translation. The relevance theory regards the legal term translation as a dynamic communicative process, which focuses on the role of the translator as well as the factor of the readers and the context so as to seek the optimal relevance. The author holds the idea that since the there exits no absolute equivalence, compared with other theory, the ostensive-inferential model guiding by the relevance theory is more flexible in the translation of legal terms. The last chapter is the summary of the current research. The conclusion of the current study is summarized. The implementation of relevance theory in other fields is introduced. The suggestions and limitations of the thesis are also mentioned in this chapter.
