In today's information age, with the fast pace of work and life newspaper reading is gradually stepping into a new era—news headline reading era. Thus the importance of news headline is becoming more and more prominent. Since the English news closely related to all aspects of western world, news reports involve politics, economy, science, education, customs and beliefs and so on. English news headlines not only generate unique linguistic features, but also always bear distinctive cultural features both in content and form.From the perspective of relevance theory, the paper aims to analyze the linguistic and cultural features of English news headlines. According to relevance theory, English news headlines can be viewed as an ostensive-inferential communication between the journalists and the readers and serve as relevance optimizer for providing the readers with the optimal ratio between contextual effect and processing effort. In order to pursue optimal relevance, the journalists and editors design linguistic and cultural information in the headlines as ostensive stimuli, which offers us a unique angle to explore the linguistic and cultural features of English news headlines. The paper will systematically analyze the linguistic and cultural features of English news headline and expect offering implications for headline writing and English newspaper teaching.
