An Analysis Of The Linguistic Features Of News English

With the development and prosperity of Chinese economy and culture, the contact of China with the outside world has become more and more frequent. The most popular ways in which modern English is expressed include the so-called mass media such as newspapers, magazines, broadcast, TV and network besides literature. To have a good command of modern English, it is not enough to learn textbooks or read some famous English novels. Language is changing constantly, especially in today's world, the advancement of science and technology, the development of society and civilization, and the complication of our life bring into a lot of new expressions, which frequently appear in news English. Through reading English news, we can not only know the things happened around us but also acquire some knowledge about English, therefore, reading English news is by all means an effective way to learn modern English.Generally speaking, news English belongs to general English, i.e., the main part of Standard English. As an applied language, it has formed unique features which differ greatly from general English. This paper intends to give an analysis of the linguistic features of news English at linguistic and rhetorical levels. Meanwhile, it points out the features of news writing. It is hoped that this paper will be helpful to English learners to read and understand news English more effectively and accurately. Moreover, we can improve our rhetorical attainment and broaden the scope of knowledge. Finally, it is also hoped that journalists can write more excellent news for us.
