A Register Analysis Of Metadiscourse In Golden Wedding

Golden Wedding has a description of the marriage of Tong Zhi and Wen Li, which is significant and welcome by many people. Nowadays, both of the studies on metadiscourse and register applied in Chinese Discourse are seldom involved. Golden Wedding before, during and after the Cultural Revolution will be analyzed from the perspectives of textual metadiscourse and interpersonal metadiscourse. Then, the metadiscourse in Golden Wedding will be reanalyzed in the view of Register Theory from the three aspects: field, tenor and mode, thus an integrative approach of"register analysis of metadiscourse"is formed. Finally, the views of marriage are presented by the integrative approach of"register analysis of metadiscourse"according to the previous analysis.The thesis intends to develop a multi-perspective approach of"register analysis of metadiscourse", viewing register from the perspective of metadiscourse, which in the end can be used by readers to have a better comprehension of Chinese discourse on marriage. By applying the approach into the analysis of the Chinese discourse, Golden Wedding before, during and after the Cultural Revolution, which are in different contexts are analyzed.Through an in-depth analysis, the thesis draws the conclusion that different metadiscourses are embodied in the different register variables. Thus, the views of marriage during different periods are well presented in the multi-perspective approach of"register analysis of metadiscourse". The thesis also tries to prove the feasibility and operability of analysis of Chinese script by the integrative"register analysis of metadiscourse"approach for readers in the analysis of the social reality of such kind of Chinese genre, not only in English, which in the end can be used by readers to have a better comprehension of Chinese discourse on marriage. This thesis falls into five chapters in total. Chapter One is the introduction, illustrating the purpose, significance of this research and the methodology, then is the brief introduction of the organization of the thesis. Chapter Two deals with the literature review on the researches of metadiscourse and register, it also gives comments on the previous studies and the enlightenment. Chapter Three deals with the theoretical framework by giving introductions of theories of metadiscourse and register, and then it puts forward an integrative approach of"register analysis of metadiscourse", that is register analysis of metadiscourse in Golden Wedding during three periods of the Cultural Revolution. Chapter Four focuses on the register analysis of metadiscourse in Golden Wedding, and tried to find out views of marriage presented by the approach of"register analysis of metadiscourse"before, during and after the Cultural Revolution. The last chapter——Chapter Five is the conclusion of this thesis based on the analysis and discussion given in the previous chapters. It contains major findings, implications and limitations of this study as well as suggestions for future research.
